Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

EFT, otherwise known as “Tapping” and often described as acupuncture without the needles is very effective for rapidly reducing anxiety, stress and other emotional issues and it works on both real and imagined stressors. EFT significantly improves your self-esteem and resilience, and reduces negative emotional states.

We often think that it’s the traumas or distresses in our life that has given us the negative emotions we experience. But if this were true, why then do others, who have had the same or similar traumas, seem so unaffected by them?

We ask ourselves if it’s just us? EFT would answer in this simple way:
The event does not cause the emotional upset. It’s the thought about the event, which causes an energy disruption that consequently causes the negative emotion.

EFT however, balances this energy disruption and the emotions around the memory are released. This makes EFT a remarkable tool!!

The science behind EFT

Studies on EFT are showing it to affect the amygdala (stress centre in the brain) and hippocampus (memory centre). Both of these brain regions play a role in our decision-making process, when we need to decide if something is a threat or not. This is well known as the fight or flight response. EFT has also been shown to lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone). Too much cortisol can result in lowered immune function and ultimately affect our physical health.

Research done through MRIs is showing that mechanical forces such as EFT’s ‘Tapping” send electrochemical impulses to the limbic and cortical regions of the brain that control stress or fear, possibly sending ‘noise’ or ‘disruption’ that affects the conditioned emotional response to the memory. This idea is related to that of “neural plasticity”, proposing that the memory becomes active and pliable, inclined to taking in new information and allowing an easier renewing of information into the patterning of emotional response to the memory. There is a growing body of research pointing to the efficacy of EFT and more can be found on the global EFT website: www.EFTuniverse.com.

Think of it like a creek in which large rocks have blocked the flow of water. The river is our body’s energy system and the rocks are our emotional reactions to past events in our life. But … when the rocks, or energy, are finally unblocked with EFT or other such energy therapy, balance is restored and equilibrium returns.

When something happens in our present life, it triggers a past response; our subconscious mind looks to the past for a way to respond. It then reacts according to that past disruption, to where the rocks fell, and the flow of energy is blocked again. Any stimulus can trigger a blockage: sounds, smells, sights, tastes, objects, animals, certain surroundings, even just a triggering word or phrase. The subconscious mind reacts according to specific, earlier learned “codes or rules of conduct” even when those codes or rules are out of date!

However EFT is said to work, your own experience is the best judge!!
